LABOUR LAMBETH PLAN TO HIKE RENTS YET AGAIN
Labour-run Lambeth Living is in financial meltdown and they want Council House residents to pay for it with another rent and charge increase for tenants and leaseholders.
Following last year's rent hike - the country’s highest - Labour councillors are considering putting rents up an extra 5% from April 2010. That's 20% more than 18 months ago. Leaseholders are at risk too. Labour is considering an increase in charges of 8% at a time when the service from Lambeth Council has all but collapsed across the borough.
Labour has cut services and delayed improvement works while Lambeth Living wastes money. Consultants have been charging fees of up to almost £700 per hour. Lambeth doled out £1,068,675 - 10% of its wage budget - on consultants in just seven months last year.
Conservatives are working with residents to stop these increases. We say that Labour Lambeth must at the very least follow guidelines from its own Government that clearly state rents should not rise by more than 3.1% this year.
Please sign our petition against Labour's rent and charges hike.

CONSERVATIVES CAMPAIGN TO SAVE LOCAL POOL
Labour Lambeth wants to demolish Clapham Manor Street Leisure Centre and pool in September.

This is yet another Labour broken promise. They even swore to “Keep Clapham Swimming” in their election manifesto, but now they plan to demolish the pool in September. This would leave Clapham without a pool for at least 17 months while they build a replacement on the same site.
Even 17 months is an optimistic prediction. Planning permission and funding for the new unit have still not been secured. In the current climate we find that alarming. Elsewhere in the borough major schemes are substantially behind schedule or have been postponed indefinitely. This cannot be allowed to happen to our pool.
Local Conservative Lloyd Milton says:
“The Government spends a fortune on advertisements stressing the dangers of obesity and the need to keep fit, yet Lambeth Labour is set to close a swimming pool that offers inexpensive exercise that is enjoyed by all ages.”

LOCAL CONSERVATIVES WANT BETTER PROTECTION FOR CLAPHAM COMMON
Labour Lambeth have ordered £1 million worth of spending cuts to the leisure budget meaning there will be fewer park rangers for security on Clapham Common.
The repair and maintenance budget for the Common has also been frozen, due to Labour’s mismanagement, leading to real fears that Labour are failing to protect our green spaces.
Also, in a recent edition of their tax payer funded propaganda sheet “Lambeth Life” Labour Lambeth brazenly admitted that “Parks and green spaces in Lambeth could host more events in a bid to earn more money.” That means even more large scale events throughout the summer months, leading to increased noise and disturbance to for local residents.
Clapham Conservative Lloyd Milton said:
“Labour are letting residents down by failing to invest in our urban environment. Clapham Common is the green lung at the heart of our community and deserves better protection.”

LABOUR HITS TENANTS WITH £12 A WEEK RENT RISE
Labour Lambeth plans to raise rents for all its 33,000 hard up tenants by between £12 and £15 a week.
Every single tenant will be worse off from April when Labour councillors put the average rents up by at least £620 per household and increase all of the service charges for tenants and leaseholders.
Labour politicians are in deep financial trouble due to a £14 million hole opening up in the Council housing rent account after officers bungled the budget for temporary accommodation for the homeless.
Clapham Conservative Julia Memery said:
“Lambeth Housing is bankrupt and the taxpayer will pay the price of Labour incompetence, but hard pressed tenants will suffer most directly. At a time when the cost of living in rocketing it is an appalling time to impose a massive rent increase.”

RESIDENTS OPPOSED TO CLOSURE OF CAVENDISH ROAD POLICE STATION
Hundreds of local people have signed the petition so far
Clapham Conservatives’ campaign to save Cavendish Road Police station is going from strength to strength, with a huge response from local residents.
Local Conservatives have been discussing the plans with Clapham residents for a number of months and have found unanimous opposition. Under Scotland Yard proposals, stations across London will be closed with local police based in shops, supermarkets and even industrial estates instead, despite concerns expressed by many front line police officers.
If you would like to add your name to the petition please email us at sca@tory.org.
Local Conservative Campaigner, Lloyd Milton, said:
“The closure would be another serious blow for local people. People want a local Police Station as it ensures shorter response times in the area.”
