I am a Conservative because I know that economic growth is the best way to bring people out of poverty.
In Peru, where I have family, economic growth has brought around 3% of the population out of hungry, soul-crushing, grinding poverty every year. In Africa GDP is up around 5% a year since the recession. So the evidence is that globalisation and freer trade has been a life-changing force for good, revolutionary in its impact.
In Lambeth we are uniquely positioned to take advantage of our different communities and their connections to different parts of the world. But we have a Labour council that has no idea how to liberate the diversity of our Borough, or how to build on its global connectedness.
Instead, the council relies on tired old left-wing ideas and platitudes, blaming central government for its own failings, whilst taking central government money to give tenants new kitchens and bathrooms.
It is not just disrespectful, but inhuman, for the council to not consult properly when it demolishes people’s homes or blocks off their street, just to push through its agenda, however enlightened the council believes its agenda to be. It is a deception to talk about boosting jobs and growth in the Borough, then not have the courage to discuss lowering taxes.
Last April the Conservative Opposition put forward a budget, approved by council finance chiefs, to reduce council tax by 1% a year, and actually increase spending. There is no need for libraries to close, for open spaces to be trashed, for popular schools to turn children away, for repairs not to be fixed, for homes to be demolished.
